Cold Laser Therapy is a medical treatment that uses focused light to stimulate tissue through a process called photobiomodulation. During this process, light enters the tissue (muscle, tendon, nerve, ligament, etc) and interacts with the cells of the treated area to trigger an increase in cellular metabolism, a decrease pain, a reduction in muscle spasm and an increase in tissue circulation. This process is cleared by the FDA and provides patients with a non-invasive, non-pharmacological alternative for pain relief.
Despite its name, Cold Laser Therapy produces a gentle warming sensation within the tissue. Typical treatments last anywhere for 3 to 12 minutes during which the patient is sitting or laying down in a comfortable position. After a treatment, patients may receive additional therapy including muscle stimulation, manual procedures, and exercise.
Cold Laser Therapy has been shown to be highly effective as a treatment for a variety of orthopedic conditionings involving soft tissue including shoulder and elbow tendonitis, plantarfasciitis, neck pain, back pain and arthritis of the knee. In addition, it is an effective treatment for pain relief following back and neck surgery.
