Pilates

Pilates is an exercise program was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s. While serving as a hospital orderly in Germany, he attached bed springs to hospital beds to support the limbs of patients who could not walk and developed exercises to strengthen and rehabilitate the bed bound patient. This concept of spring-resistance eventually led to the development of a piece of Pilates equipment known as the “Cadillac.” In the early 1920’s, he emigrated to the United States and eventually opened a “body conditioning” gym featuring his apparatus with spring resistance.

Pilates integrates:

  • Mindful breathing coordinated with movements
  • Concentration to isolate and control movements
  • Finding and activating the muscles of the core in the front, back and sides of the body
  • Flowing movements through large ranges of motion
  • Purposeful movement for developing control and precision

Pilates is useful for:

  • all age groups
  • any fitness level
  • athletes and dancers
  • orthopedic and neurologic injuries
  • neck and back diagnoses
  • injury prevention
  • detecting faulty movement patterns

Physical Therapists who utilize Therapeutic Pilates for their patients have had specialized training to learn how to perform and teach the exercises properly. Skilled observation and patient instruction during one on one treatment sessions are the keys to success. The mind body skills gained during each rehabilitation session carry over into daily life.

Living with enhanced awareness of breath, movement and posture results in less pain, improved energy and a more joyful life.
