Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy, by definition, is a therapeutic procedure that uses water.  The healing benefits of water have been recognized for thousands of years. This procedure should not be confused with Pool Therapy which is a form of hydrotherapy that involves exercises in a swimming pool. Hydrotherapy can be delivered in a variety of ways. In the clinical setting, patients frequently receive hydrotherapy by placing the injured area in a whirlpool. This is a common treatment for injuries that involve the extremities such as knees, elbows, hands, and feet.  Whirlpools are also highly effective for treatment of fractures once a cast has been removed. Hydrotherapy can be warm or cold, and sometimes involves rapidly switching the injured area between warm and cold. This procedure, called a “contrast bath,” is highly effective at increasing circulation and reducing swelling following an injury such as an ankle sprain.  Patients who suffer from back or neck pain may also choose to soak their whole body in a spa. This is another form of hydrotherapy but caution is required to avoid excessive temperature and medical clearance from your physician is suggested for any patients who have a history of heart or blood pressure issues.
