Craniosacral Therapy

What is Craniosacral Therapy
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. Around 1940 Osteopathic Physician William G. Sutherland added it to the other manual therapies of Osteopathy. The techniques were further developed by Dr. John E. Upledger, D.O. at Michigan State University.

Using a soft touch on the cranium and sacrum, which is generally no greater than 5 grams, practitioners release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. Restrictions and tension of the membranes in the Craniosacral system are often the result of trauma, surgery and stress. CST is used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and it’s positive effect on a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction including concussions, TBI, scoliosis, chronic pain and TMJ. Training in this hands on technique is required along with extensive concentration on anatomy and neuroanatomy. The goals of treatment are to improve mobility within the craniosacral system to improve wellness and positively affect structures of the head, jaw and neck.
