Providing excellence through experience. par· a· gon | (noun): a model of excellence or perfection.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently issued updated guidelines for physical activity which include the recommendation that people between the ages of 18 and 64 get between 150 and 300 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous exercise per week. These new guidelines have also been extended to include those individuals with chronic health conditions or disability. The current pandemic has revealed that individuals dealing with health issues, including obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, often suffer more serious effects of Covid-19, and are more likely to require hospitalization.

Physical activity is recognized as being beneficial to both physical and mental well-being. During the pandemic, depression has been steadily rising, especially in students. Encouraging regular exercise and activity can help students cope with the social isolation that is occurring with remote learning. The new recommendations suggest children receive up to 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise or activity daily. This can include walking, hiking, bike rising or engaging them in creative activities such as scavenger hunts. The 65 and older population are also encouraged to engage in moderate exercise for 150-300 minutes, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous exercise, however, more attention should be placed on strength and balance due to the increased risk of falling that occurs with age.

As with any exercise program, it is suggested that people begin gradually and consult with their physician, or healthcare professional, when starting. To review these New Exercise Guidelines, visit the World Health Organizations website.
